Heritage Recipes | Meet the Creator

My mother always said that we have the responsibility of carrying our heritage to the coming generations and our recipes are a way for that.

This is the philosophy with which Mrs. Satyawati Shukla has lived all her life. Hailing from the Awadhi community, she has held on to her traditions and the heritage recipes that have been passed in her family for generations now. In Nepal, Awadhis are a minority population and reside in Banke, Bardiya, Kanchanpur, Kapilvastu, Rupandehi, and Nawalparasi districts.

Mrs. Satyawati Shukla

Satyawati, now 63 years old and a mother of 4 children and grandmother of 3, has spent her life like most of the women in her region, taking care of her family. Always dressed in a simple saree with a pallu on her head, she barely steps out of her house. However, her recipes have reached beyond the borders of Nepal and made their way into Europe.

As someone who has spent her life creating and preserving traditional recipes, in her kitchen one can find a variety of pickles and spice blends and each of these dishes has its roots in age-old recipes. Her mango pickles are covered in healthy spices and her spice blends like the bukni masala can mesmerize anyone with its delicious fragrance and exquisite flavors.

The Bukni masala or the chatpate chhop as we call it at Sattva, is a recipe more than 100 years old. It was passed on to Satyawati from her mother.

While remembering her mother, Satyawati shares, “Never compromise on the quality of the ingredients and as a result, the bukni masala will reward you with good taste and great health, my mother would say. The fragrance still reminds me of her warmth and I try to recreate the same emotion for the people who will try my bukni masala. My children loved it growing up and now I am happy that I can share the same emotion and flavor with the world.”

Bringing The Traditional “Bukni Masala” a.k.a Chatpate Chhop to the world!

The bukni masala is the spice blend that played a major role in making Sattva possible. It is our first blend in our traditional and healthy spice blend range.

Sparking joy all around | One Masala at a time

“I feel very proud when people tell me that they tried my bukni masala (Chatpate Chhop) and they loved it. I never thought that a simple spice blend like that would bring so much joy to people”, Satyawati shares enthusiastically about seeing her masala being loved by people.

Women like Satyawati are an inspiration for us at Sattva. We are immensely grateful to them for sharing their unique flavors with us. We hope to work with more women like her across different communities in Nepal because their wisdom deserves to be on the global platform rather than just being limited to the four walls of their kitchen. This way we introduce new healthy flavors to the world while ensuring that these inspiring women are celebrated and well compensated for their capabilities and contributions towards global wellbeing.

  1. Awesome. I have tried this chatpate chhop and i will say this is one of the best masala i ever tried. You use it in chicken, egg curry or any other curry. It blends with all the recipes and brings a very unique taste. You buy it once and then you buy it again. Experience Sattva and get immersed in the flavour of Nepal.
